Sunrise {Chapter One}

Every sunrise in Riverton, Wyoming is nothing short of average, but each morning Toby is determined to make me see it the way he does. He calls me at ungodly hours of the morning telling me how “the stars are descending at such a pace that signifies a change in my morning attitude” and “the altocumulus floccus clouds are clumped together in such a way that will prevent me from crossing paths with any aggravating pigeons on this Tuesday”. He has so much life within him that light radiates off his olive skin. Come within a meter or two of Toby and his energy just seeps onto you.

I remember asking him how he managed, a couple months ago. I asked him just how he managed to be so full of life without break, without a breath of simple air. I hadn’t the slightest clue how he could pour all of his energy into others and still have any left for himself. He just responded by saying

“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”

I don’t know where he came up with that. Maybe he read it on a Snapple lid or maybe it was another of his 2 A.M. ponderings. I wouldn’t be surprised either way, to be entirely honest. I am not quite sure how I ended up with someone so profound.
