Butterflies

Butterflies always seem to be romanticized and portrayed as a beautiful, airy feeling you get in your stomach when you see someone.

What about the butterflies that stir things up and attack your heart as you walk to the front of the room to present or get ready to perform?

What about the butterflies that are silently there but don’t let you know of their presence until it’s too late?

What about the butterflies that gnaw through you when you see something, someone who used to hurt you? The ones that shut down your brain and make your knees buckle?

What about the butterflies in your mind? The ones that cloud your thoughts as you are so filled with joy you find it impossible to think straight?

What about the butterflies that break you down? The ones that close your airways and pour through your tearducts?
These “butterflies” aren’t always beautiful, shy smiles and blushing cheeks. Sometimes, there the blank-eyes in the back of the class.
